What can we say about the Carnival Sunshine? Oh I know…. WE LOVED IT!! She is Carnival Cruise Lines beauty of a ship that has been transformed totally from the inside out. You see, Carnival Sunshine was once the Carnival Destiny.… yes she has been in the fleet for quite some time. Her transformation is truly incredible. I can say this because I was on the Destiny in 2012… I have my Sail and Sign Card to prove it 🙂
The first thing I noticed when I stepped onto the Sunshine was that the Atrium was completely redone. The colors, the decor, the seating…. brand new. I just kept saying… Wow!! I the proceeded to the deck we all go when first get onto the ship.. Yep you guessed it.. LIDO DECK!!! I mean that is where the buffet is located 🙂 Usually you go right to the buffet dining room, but on the Sunshine you are able to eat from two other restaurants near the pool area. The Blue Iguana Cantina & Guy’s Burger Joint.
The Blue Iguana Cantina has Tacos & Burritos ready to serve just the way you like them. They had a barrage of toppings, sauces, and choice of meats. They even had a sign to direct you on how to order 🙂 The Blue Iguana was open for lunch and breakfast!! Loved it! The breakfast burrito was delicious. My combo was Wheat Tortilla, Chicken Sausage, Peppers, Red Onions, Hashbrowns and Cheese!
Now I am not a Burger person, but I love Guy Fieri, and so did many of the guests on the Sunshine. Guy’s Burger Joint was always a hopping place for lunch until 6pm when they closed. Burgers and fries and a ton of toppings to choose from. You can order a plain burger, a Cheeseburger and add bacon. Then you go to the toppings bar and have a grand old time topping your burger with all the different condiments. You can even order just the fries! The bar had two sides for guest convenience that held ketchup mustard, mayo, onions, pickles, peppers and so much more to make your burger your own. Great concept.. But I sure wished that they could incorporate a TURKEY BURGER choice in there as well…… hmmmm 😉
So continuing on to the Buffet , I was pleasantly greeted with a funky bright new decor! New tables, chairs, light fixtures and benchlike bar seating for families to eat sitting next to each other. I was thoroughly wowed when the walkway opened up to the center of the restaurant to showcase the food stations. What a breath of fresh air! I could instantly see everything within a 360 view. Great job Carnival! Dessert bar, Salad stations, the main buffet in the middle with 24 hr Pizza on one side and the deli on the other side of the restaurant. I was impressed and thought it was a great flow through design for people traffic 🙂 Sorry no pic, I was too busy eating! 🙂
Towards the back of the Lido Deck buffet Restaurant was an exit to the specialty restaurants, Cucina Del Capitano (Italian Cuisine) & Ji Ji Asian Kitchen. Even though these are pay to dine restaurants for dinner, I commend Carnival on actually letting you sample before you pay to dine. During lunch hours these restaurants are open to dine with a limited menu. Cucina Del Capitano turns into a Create Your Own Pasta Bar. You pick your type of pasta, sauce, and toppings and chefs prepare your lunch for you right on the spot. For Ji Ji Asian Kitchen, you can also create your own stir fry dish by picking the type of noodle, vegetables, meat and sauce. Then the chef prepare your picks in a wok right in front of you. They use a new clean wok for each guest! Now that’s a lot of Wok! Get it … Wok… Instead of Work….. ehemm ..ok check out some pics below 🙂
Okay enough about food, let’s head on over to the stateroom. I was again in a WOW state of mind when I arrived to the deck to walk the hallway to the stateroom. The hallways were HUGE in width!! Totally in awe! This is another Great Job to Carnival for opening up the hallways. They were always pretty tight. Another shock and awe was the hallway decor!! The hallway is decorated reminiscent to a resort. The stateroom doors have a wood/bamboo look and in between doors they placed murals of palm trees and the beach! So cool!! I loved it! I had a balcony stateroom and it was a great size. The decor was contemporary and the balcony was pretty big. Definitely an upgrade from the balcony stateroom I stayed in when the Sunshine was the Destiny.
Let’s chat about you can do on the Sunshine. Well you can truly do nothing.. just eat and relax or you can take part in some fun activities that are planned for your enjoyment. I enjoyed the Dive In theater which was the Big Screen on the Lido Deck that showed movies nightly. I caught up on some movies I never got to see and also was able to check out some of the classics from when I was growing up… The Goonies. There is free freshly popped popcorn available during the showing of the movies. The Popcorn was kind of hidden, even though you could follow the smell. It is located behind the Red Frog Bar on the Lido Deck. Make sure you get your popcorn, find a lounge chair, lay back and enjoy your movies under the stars. Don’t forget your blankie! That sea breeze is breezy!!!
The Spa onboard hosted quite a few Free Seminars that were very interesting. I attended three of them while on the Sunshine. There was one on how to increase your metabolism, one on detoxification and another one on acupuncture. The seminars were about one hour long and jam packed with great information. I learned a lot and am going to implement what I can to better my daily activity. So if you are interested in this kind of information, don’t discount the opportunity to hear about it. The presenters were very knowledgeable and eager to talk to you after the presentations if you had any other questions.
Other entertainment included the nightly shows. These were stepped up a notch! Go Carnival! Some of the shows required audience participation which I thought was pretty cool!! My favorite was the Studio 54 /Soul Train Muscial! Loved It! Audience participation was required for these two shows. It was like dancing with the stars on another level! lol Another show I loved was the Hasbro Game Show. This also required audience participation. You actually play larger then life Hasbro Board Games in a Game show style! So cool! During my cruise they played, Trivial Pursuit, Guesstures, Yahtzee and Operation. The best part is that because it is a game show, the participants went away with some sort of prize!!
The ship also had bands playing, pianos dueling, comedians making you laugh, karoake, which also made some people laugh :), and numerous other activities. There was something fore everyone! I even took a towel folding class 🙂 See below ….
All in all, we had the best time on this ship. We can’t wait for our Aquafest 2014 Group – We SHININ’ *BLING BLING, to be able to experience the Carnival Sunshine in July 2014! Since my voyage, the Sunshine has sailed over to Port Canaveral, where she now calls her home port. I know they will have a great time!
Till next time, Remember to always #JustPackYourBag
Cruisely Yours, 🙂
